  Rhona MacLeod is a beautiful middle daughter with a fiery temper that matches her hair. She is also the daughter of a clan chief of the Isle of Skye. She wants nothing more then to remain free and live her life the way she wants without having to bow down to any man, especially a husband, so she refuses all of the would be suitors that have asked for her hand. It also doesn't help that she just seems to know that these men are not right for her and would only stifle her way of life.
  
  Taran MacKinnon is one of Cheiftan MacLeod's most trusted warriors and some may say that he is the chiefs dog. He does anything and everything that he is asked to do by the chief. He has a secret though. He carries a secret passion for the chief's middle daughter. However he bears some horrible scars on his face and sometimes that is all that people see. They see the scars and not the man. Rhona is one of those people, and she has never past his scars and forbidding appearance that has earned him the horrible name of 'The Beast of Dunvegan'.
  
  Then when Rhona's father has had enough of her defiance, he makes a decision that will force his daughter to take a husband weather she wants to or not. He decides to hold some games. These games will bring warriors from far and wide to compete for the fair Rhona's hand and she has no choice, but to wed the victor whoever he may be. Taran finally sees his chance to not only prove himself, but win as well. If he wins he gets the woman he has always wanted, but can he win her heart as well?
  
  Wow this is the first book that I have ever read from Jayne Castel and I am totally floored. It doesn't get better then this. There was never a dull moment and it was so good that I'm almost ready to cry now that it's done. It took me on a roller coaster of emotions that I can't even begin to explain. There were times I smiled and there were times I wanted to jump in the book and smack someone upside the head. This is exactly what makes a perfect book in my eyes. I can't wait to read the next story because I truly feel like I personally know these characters now.
• SETTING Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye, Scotland; early summer, 1346 AD. Lady Rhona MacLeod, the middle daughter of the clan chief Malcolm MacLeod, has yet to marry, to the ire of her father. She sees how marriage has destroyed the happy person her sister Caitlin once was, and has not yet met any man she feels is a match for her. When she refuses marriage to an important ally of the clan, her father arranges a contest for any man who wishes to compete for her hand! Embarrassed, outraged, and Rhona feels she has no good future awaiting her, and runs away. Her father sends his chief warrior in pursuit, who finds her, secures her, and takes her back to face her father. She has no choice but to accept the winner of the contest, who turns out to be...the man who captured and returned her!
  CRITIQUE FASCINATING story that reveals the heartache married life could be for women of that time, which draws the reader’s sympathy for Rhona’s situation. She is a beautiful, headstrong young woman who has demanded to be taught to fight, which serves her well in fending off unwelcome advances, and serves her clan later in a battle for their land. Placed in juxtaposition to this beautiful woman is Taran, man so scarred on the outside, that his kind-heartedness to her seems impossible to understand initially. The way he was scarred is a mystery, until the end, when Taran finally trusts Rhona enough to lay bare his heart and soul.
  The storyline is nicely complex, and the characters are well developed. The delicate way this scarred man treated Rhona was touching! The author made my heart go out to Taran, just hoping that Rhona would see the good man lying beneath the scars. What a great beginning for a series! If this book is any indication of what is to come in the series, I am eager for the next book.

• Just finished "Shortest Way Home," and I am now thinking Pete Buttigieg could indeed be our next President.
  
  I immediately recognized South Bend, Indiana, when I arrived from Pittsburgh. Both cities have suffered from the loss of American manufacturing (Pittsburgh steel, and South Bend Studebaker automobiles). I had to move from Pittsburgh to South Bend about 6 years ago, and I have witnessed the renaissance here, inspired and helmed by this young, dynamic guy.
  
  "Mayor Pete" came to the office of mayor with impressive credentials and a drive to reshape his hometown into a model of success for the twenty-first century. This book is the story of small city politics, and of the nuts and bolts of turning high expectations and soaring ideas into concrete success.
  
  Along with the story of leading South Bend, much attention will no doubt be paid to the fact that Mayor Pete, along with being a veteran, is a married gay man. But that story, couched as it is amid the tale of drive, success, dedication, patriotism, optimism and vision, becomes not such a big deal. He benefits from the progress we have made in accepting our lgbtq fellow citizens, but his candor is refreshing and inspiring.
  
  This book reveals a man of intellectual agility, optimism, bravery, and a cohesive vision that is refreshing and clearly conveyed. Whatever his future holds in politics, one should not dismiss this guy. My bet is that he will inspire surprising support from a diverse group of converts. It's rather fitting that Joe Kennedy III is a fan.
• I bought this book as a way of learning about one of the less well-known Democratic contenders for POTUS in 2020, expecting a bullet-list of political goals and Buttigieg’s personal take on why, at his young age, he deserves to be president. What I found instead was a fascinating story of how a bright, clever young man put his decaying Midwestern hometown of South Bend, Indiana, on the road to recovery. Against the backdrop of a well-written story of how Buttigieg grew a city is an even more poignant story of how he grew himself, what that self entails, and details of how that self came to be. The book is not political, though, by its conclusion the author’s politics are clear. It is not a book of promises, but rather a sharing of achievements and the thinking that produced them, which inevitably reveals what Buttigieg would bring to the presidency. Finally, it is not a book of lofty ideals, but a sharing of the recognition that ideals that are worth pursuing require hard work and a willingness to labor intimately and constructively with those around you, even when those around you don’t agree with you. He is bright, insightful, and writes beautifully, skillfully turning the potentially boring in-house details of small town bureaucracy into a fascinating mosaic of growth and hope and never giving up. I feel that my purpose in buying this book was fulfilled I know Buttigieg well enough to make in informed decision about him in 2020. More importantly, the book allowed me to get to know him as a person, a perspective too often absent in assessing fit for political office. For anyone interested in the upcoming presidential election, it is a must-read.

• PEOPLE LISTEN UP, HE'S THE REAL DEAL!! I rarely read political books since I'm a scientist, but this is such a fantastic book and I would recommend it to everyone who's looking for hope in American politics! Pete has good ideas and a clear vision for the future, his experiences are amazing, has a stellar resume, but is such a down-to-earth person and so likeable. Haven't felt so hopeful in such a long time! You go Pete! (Also, I'm a student at Oxford. So glad we're from the same school.)
• Fascinating look at South Bend and "Mayor Pete." His heart and intelligence shine throughout the chapters. I didn't want to put it down.
• This book reads like an intimate journal and paints a picture of South Bend, growing up in a “rust belt” city, being a member of the LGBT community in the Midwest, running for office, and taking on leadership roles in order to give back to communities you love. Pete’s voice is certainly wise beyond his years and this personal memoir sheds light onto why that is. A great read.
• I grew up in South Bend, and recently moved away. This book has been a trip down memory lane. The ideas presented are applicable to any midwestern city, including where I live today in Wisconsin. Mayor Pete’s powerful anecdotes will make any Midwesterner smile.

• Firstly, the story of Oak Island is a full of many people such as explorers, investors etc. So it does not come as a shock there are many characters to follow. This is especially true since the author has included all the history since it’s discovery in late 1700s. However, I found it very bogged down with many details, some I found unnecessary. I was also disappointed that while he gave extensive details on theories, he completely glazed past the ivory whistle that had been found on the island. Previous to reading this book, I had never heard of the ivory whistle and I consider myself a big fan of the show. He mentions it once and gives no details of how it was found, who found it and where it is now. These details is what interests me about the entire conspiracy. I am less interested in every little detail of how big the shafts were created. The extensive history he gives on every theory (and there is many many theories) lost me. I became bored over this far fetched and wordy description. I love history but even as a history fanatic, the relation to the history he provided and Oak Island was far stretched. Overall, it was very hard to follow and I found unorganized in thought. Perhaps he could have organized each chapter by a time period of exploration. This would have made things more clear. He jumped around so much it was not enjoyable to read.
• Randall Sullivan has gone above all expectations and delivered The Most in depth history of Oak Island written to date. He gives an honest inside look at the past and present treasure hunt on Oak Island and this is a MUST READ for any Oak Island enthusiast! The book is filled with facts and Randall took his Rolling Stone article and built a literary monument of a book. His style is so palatable that even pages and pages of accounts of past bore holes are intriguing again and each theory is weighed realisticly and with solid facts. I’ve followed Oak Island for a while now and I absolutely enjoyed every page of this book! This is the real story behind the hit tv show also, and the Truth about the people behind it and the people involved in the hunt. Sullivan is an excellent & experienced writer, highly recommend it.
• The book was well researched and well written. It flows well without dragging. The book covers the 200+ year long history of the search of/for the Money Pit through the current TV show with the Laginas. This book fills in a lot of the details that are mentioned only briefly on the show. The book also does a good job of tying together pertinent information. Like why finding Shaft 6 could be an important break thru in relocating the Money Pit's location lost since the collapse in 1861.
  
  Sullivan does a great job in debunking some of the more dubious theories presented by both past treasure hunters and in the War Room guest theorist episodes. The historical research and explanation of the possible involvement of Francis Bacon is well done. Good read, highly recommended.
• I was looking forward to this book.. I have seen some of the episodes of the series, The Curse of Oak Island, but not all of them. Mr. Sullivan did tons of research , I found the book a little lacking. I would have liked more information about the men, past and present who obsessed about the Money Pit, and more about the archaeological dig. It was a valiant effort on Mr. Sullivan's part. Just wished the book had a little more meat to it.

• If you only read one book about Oak Island, this is it. Describes the history from the beginning, the people, the theories, the books, major articles, and the amazing finds recently made that literally influence the history of this continent.
  For all the "dry" aspect of the history the author does an excellent job of putting excitement and intrigue into the story. I was not disappointed and highly recommend this book even if you have been a faithful follower of the show as have I. Many insights into the show and events surrounding the making of it. GREAT book!!!!
• Having watched nearly every episode of The Curse of Oak Island I decided to buy this book after seeing the author on the show. The book is very well researched and mentions details that are not in the show. The only complaint I have is the chapter on Francis Bacon; it is way too long. I nearly lost interest part way through that chapter. I would liked to have read more about the current search and the people involved.
• A great read. Yes, it's full of details. The book is very well written and takes the reader through 200 plus years of information up to the present day TV show. For those of you who had negative comments about the book, I'm not quite sure you actually read it. Kudos to Mr. Sullivan, a job well done.
